In this weekend we’ll be looking at actions, herbs, supplements and nutrition for Immune and Skin Self-Care including using herbs as medicine and food and also a component of medicine making. We strive to give you a better understanding of the difference between acute and chronic disease processes and care as well as a basic capacity to apply the knowledge you develop for safe self-care and in-home use.
Saturday, Dec 4th:
10 am-12pm: Immune System Overview & Herbs for Acute Immune Issues
The morning we will begin with an ‘energetic perspective’ on the season of winter and look at ways to keep our immune system healthy throughout the year. We’ll cover Immune Physiology and then look at a herbalist’s approach to acute and infectious immune issues, concentrating on the herbal anti-microbial, anti-fungal and diaphoretic herbs for fever management. We’ll also touch on the subjects of influenza & the common cold, evolving herbal perspectives for COVID-19.
1-3 pm:- Nutrition & Supplements for the Immune System
Did you know that over 70% of the immune system lives in the digestive tract? This afternoon we will begin with an overview of the physiological connection between the digestive and immune systems, discuss the role of the microbiome, and review specific dietary inputs to support immunity. This class will conclude with a discussion on the use of immunity supporting supplements including probiotics, vitamin B, Zinc, and others.
Sunday, Dec 5th:
10 am- 12 pm: Deep Immune Support Herbs
This morning, we’ll start with getting to know an array of Medicinal Mushrooms and herbs known for their Immune Supportive actions. These include Reishi, Shiitake, Maitake, Chaga, Turkeytail, Cordyceps, Grifola, Astragalus, Rhodiola, Pau d Arco and a discussion on how these are best used medicinally will be undertaken.
1-3 pm: Lymphatic System & Skin
The weekend will finish up with a focus on the Skin and Lymphatic systems, which are actually part of our immune system & a key body defense. We seem to forget that our skin is our largest organ and often needs tending, particularly in the winter months! It protects us from hot & cold, chemicals, light and micro-organisms so let’s treat it well. Classic Alterative and Lymphatic herbs to assist in elimination. Diaphoretic herbs also work on the skin & will be covered this afternoon. We’ll also look at blends for psoriasis, eczema, burns and wounds.

Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification at MASH at our home at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is currently taught online via Zoom in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm) each month (except August) with a follow –up study group webinar 1 ½ weeks after the weekend classes. Assignments and study between classes are required for certification. Classes are recorded so they can be made up if missed. The one-year program consisting of 11 months of study, leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 11 months and concentrates on protocols and a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Certificate of Advanced Therapeutic Herbalism or a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism (depending on clinic choices).
