Gotu Kola, Centella asiatica, is a delicate, mildly flavored plant that is commonly found growing in damp marshy areas and next to gently moving streams and creeks around the world. It is used in the traditional medical systems of India, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
In India, this plant is sometimes called Brahmi, and can be confused with Bacopa monnieri. Both plants are considered rejuvenative, but Bacopa is the “true” Brahmi, and an Adaptogen (substance that helps the body deal with stress).
For the Respiratory System
Common colds, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and other respiratory infections can be treated with Gotu Kola because it has natural antiviral and antibacterial properties that make it perfect for boosting the immune system.
In fact, some people have found it to be very effective for treating serious viruses, such as swine flu. Besides these internal uses, it also works wonders for external skin conditions and wounds.
For the Skin
To prevent a cut or scrape from being infected, gotu kola leaves can be mashed with a pestle and mortar then applied directly to the affected area. A clean bandage must then be used to hold the poultice in place.
As a skin tonic, water or vinegar infused with Gotu Kola keeps the skin tight, smooth, and youthful.
To Improve Poor Memory
Gotu Kola is commonly known for its ability to enhance brain function without dangerous side effects like those that are found in pharmaceuticals. In fact, it is so safe that it is often used for small children living in Asia who are struggling in school because of problems with their memory. It enhances blood flow to the brain and acts as a stimulant, which also makes it perfect for treating Attention Deficit Disorder.
There is no caffeine in it though, so while it does increase energy from the stimulant properties, there is no “crash’ or withdrawal symptoms from it. Many adults over the age over 40 find that it works remarkably well for improving their mental alertness and concentration for tasks that require more focus too.
