Sea Buckthorn Benefits
Nutritional Content
What makes Sea Buckthorn oil so beneficial? Containing more than 190 nutrients and phytonutrients, it’s packed with nutritional value! The Vitamin C content of Sea Buckthorn is over 12 times that of an orange. The Vitamin E content is equal to that of wheat germ. The Vitamin A content is three times higher than that over carrots, and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) content is four times that of ginseng. Sea Buckthorn also contains Omega 3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, and it is therefore an excellent source of Omega fatty acids for vegans in particular.
Other nutrients generously found in Sea Buckthorn fruit and seed oil include carotenoids, tocopherols, and tocotrienols. Sea Buckthorn also contains important antioxidants such as glucosides, phenols, terpenes, beta-carotene and plant sterols. Trace amounts of copper, iron, manganese and selenium are also found in this amazing plant.
Health Benefits
Because of its high content of Omega fatty acids, Sea Buckthorn provides numerous health benefits. Omega-7 is believed to be a helpful anti-inflammatory agent. The fatty acids also promote healing of the gastrointestinal tract. Sea Buckthorn is commonly used with great success in conjunction with other herbal therapies in the treatment of Leaky Gut Syndrome. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and constipation are two conditions for which Sea Buckthorn is indicated.
In addition to this, a recent study found that oral supplements of Sea Buckthorn relieved dry eye symptoms such as redness and burning. This is due both to Sea Buckthorn’s moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin B12 and the Omega fatty acids in Sea Buckthorn have also been shown to aid in the prevention of cognitive diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Sea Buckthorn is also excellent for nourishing our hair, skin and nails. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce burning, itching, inflammation, redness, and skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. The Vitamin E contained in Sea Buckthorn promotes healing and reduces scarring. The high concentration of Vitamin C helps to keep the skin hydrated, firm and elastic.
History
Medical texts from Tibet, China and India all discuss the value of Sea Buckthorn as a medicinal plant. Sea Buckthorn has been used for millennia in Asia and Europe for everything from pain relief, cough suppression, healthy digestion, blood circulation, and more. The scientific name for Sea Buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides, translates to “tree that makes the horse shine”. Sea Buckthorn was used not only to keep horses’ hair smooth and shiny but also to cure blindness in the animals.
What is a good form and brand you would recommend? Thank you for the article.
Hi Michelle,
We like New Chapter and Genesis Today brands for internal use. New Chapter has a softgel that is very easy to take, and Genesis makes a juice supplement.
For external use, Aubrey Organics has a lovely serum.
