What is Nasya Oil and Why Should I Put It Up My Nose?
Nasya oil is an invigorating Ayurvedic therapy used for more than 5,000 years to treat ailments occurring above the collar bone. This balancing herbal oil improves a number of discomforts including but not limited to clogged nasal passages, hoarse voice, stiff neck, jaw pain, headaches, ear clogging and earaches.
Nasya oil cleans, lubricates and protects the delicate skin of the nasal passages and Eustachian tubes of the ears. The cervical lymph nodes, found in the neck, also benefit from Nasya oil therapy. These lymph nodes often become swollen and infected, affecting the health of our ears, nose and throat.
According to the Ayurvedic system, the nose is the gateway to the brain and endocrine system, supplying your brain with much needed energy and life-force. The nose is an excellent route for administering medicine because absorption is very quick. This way of administration is called Nasya.
How to use it
Nasya oil is safe to use with children, and is a perfect preventative remedy against wintertime sniffles. Kids’ ears and noses are especially delicate – simply dab a very small amount onto the ears or nose with a cotton swab.
Traveling on a plane? Take your Nasya oil. Sinuses typically get dried out during the extended duration of recycled air, and we are very susceptible to getting sick from whatever is passed around the airplane cabin. Nasya oil is also great to use on cold and windy days, or in any conditions that might irritate your nasal passages.
Drops of the oil can be administered while lying down, head tilted backwards and nose facing towards the sky. The decided dosage is placed in each nostril using a dropper or cotton swab.
This position is maintained for a few minutes to allow for full absorption into the naval cavity. Some of the oil might seep into the oral cavity through the nose, and this can be spit out. You can use this procedure yourself at home.
