The endocrine system is made up of the endocrine organs, which include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, the pancreas and the gonads. It controls the hormones that regulate our blood sugar level, rate of metabolism, absorption of calcium, fight or flight mechanism and many other processes.
This weekend, we will look at worldwide historical and modern use of herbal medicine for the management of endocrine conditions such as diabetes, thyroid dysregulation and dysfunction including Hashimoto’s and Grave’s disease. We’ll examine ways to regulate the endocrine glands through diet, herbs, supplements and lifestyle.
Saturday, April 2nd
10am-12pm: The Endocrine System (Diabetes)
We’ll start with an overview of endocrine physiology then cover the herbal materia medica and actions for blood sugar stabilization and regulation. This includes Cinnamon, Fenugreek, Gymnema sylvestre, Stevia rebaudiana, Panax Ginseng, Holy Basil and Bitter Melon.
1-3pm: Diabetes continued
This afternoon will cover supplements, diet and lifestyle changes that assist in regulating blood sugar levels in cases of hypoglycemia, pre-diabetes, and diabetes. This includes therapeutic diets and supplements for blood sugar stabilization and regulation such as Alpha-lipoic acid, Anti-oxidants, Berberine, Beta-glucan, Chromium, Vanadium, Magnesium.
Sunday, April 3rd
10am-12pm: Thyroid Regulation & Dysfunction
This morning’s class covers thyroid physiology, before diving into specific herbs, supplements and lifestyle changes that assist in thyroid regulation for underactive thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s. We will also cover the materia medica & actions for this system including Kelp & Bladderwrack, Coleus forskolii, Guggul, Ashwagandha, Gotu Kola, Hawthorn, Prickly Ash, Ginkgo biloba.
1-3pm: Thyroid continued
In the afternoon, we’ll explore herbs, supplements and lifestyle changes that assist in thyroid dysfunction including overactive thyroid conditions such as Grave’s disease. Diet, Lifestyle, materia medica & actions for hyperactive thyroid include Motherwort, Bugleweed, Lemon Balm, Gromwell, Rosemary, Sage.

Intrigued by herbs? The herbalists at Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism (MASH) have a combined experience of using them for more than 100 years! We’d love to share our expertise with you. Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification at MASH at our home at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is currently taught online via Zoom in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm) each month (except August) with a follow –up study group webinar 1 ½ weeks after the weekend classes. Assignments and study between classes are required for certification. Classes are recorded so they can be made up if missed. Each weekend is $199, which includes class recordings, power points, handouts, study material and the follow-up webinar. Enrollment is on a rolling basis so you can join at any time.
The one-year program consisting of 11 months of study, leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 11 months and concentrates on protocols and a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Certificate of Advanced Therapeutic Herbalism or a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism (depending on clinic choices).
