When it comes to herbs, sometimes 1+1 is greater than two. In the science of herbal formulations, synergistic combinations of herbs are discovered in which the herbs enhance each other’s activity to achieve a specific medicinal purpose. In these formulas, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
Lemon Balm and St. John’s Wort are two such herbs that enhance each other’s activity to create a stronger medicine than if taken by themselves. Much to our luck, these two cheerful plants come together to create a unique and powerful remedy for lifting the winter blues.
Both Lemon Balm and St. John’s Wort are well known for being uplifting to the spirit. Lemon Balm is particularly helpful for calming the mind, encouraging concentration, and improving our ability to respond to stress. St. John’s Wort literally brings sunshine into the dark days of winter by enhancing our ability to absorb sunlight. It is perfect for lifting the mild to moderate depression characterized by feeling low, sour, and cut off from one’s emotions.
When taken together, these two lovely herbs complement each other to create a truly wonderful tea for the winter months.
Uplifting Winter Tea
1-2 teaspoons Lemon Balm
1-2 teaspoons St. John’s Wort
raw honey to taste (optional)
Pour 8oz boiling water over the herbs, cover and steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain, add honey, and enjoy 2-3 cups daily.
This tea can be made in large batches for ease of use– simply use equal parts of the two herbs. Capsules may be substituted for convenience’s sake, but we tend to recommend starting with the tea if you can find the time to brew it.
Enjoy!
