Supporting our frame is one of the most important things we can do throughout our lifetime. Our bones, muscles, joints and connective tissue hold us together and wear and tear is inevitable as we age.
This weekend, we will look at herbal actions, herbs, supplements and dietary suggestions specific for the musculoskeletal system and cover both acute conditions such as sports injuries, sprains and strains, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel, and chronic conditions such as gout, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.
We’ll also explore methods of pain control using herbs in oral and topical form as well as supplements, massage, acupressure, and mindfulness techniques. The Sunday class includes recipes for some topical creams and ointments to have in your medicine chest.
Saturday, March 5th:
10am-12pm: Musculoskeletal System: First Aid & Sports Medicine-Herbs and Nutrition for Acute Conditions
This morning class will be an overview of herbal actions such as alteratives, anti-rheumatics, anti-spasmodics, anti-inflammatories, anodynes, circulatory stimulants, rubefacients and vulneraries classically used for issues in the musculo-skeletal system. It will also cover herbs, supplements and dietary suggestions specific for acute conditions such as sports injuries, sprains and strains, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel.
1-3pm: Musculoskeletal System: Herbs, Supplements and Nutrition for Chronic Conditions
Exercise and proper amounts of vitamins and minerals are vital for managing chronic musculoskeletal issues but herbs can play a large role in clearing inflammatory metabolites out of joints or easing the creaking and cracking of arthritis. This afternoon class will cover basic anatomy and physiology in this system as well the Western herbal materia medica herbs and actions including alteratives and anti-rheumatics. Anti-Inflammatory diets and supplements will also be covered as well as the conditions of Gout, Osteo-Arthritis; Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoporosis.
Sunday, March 6th:
10am-12pm: Pain Workshop
This morning, we’ll look at methods of pain control using herbs in oral and topical form as well as supplements, massage, acupressure, and mindfulness techniques. We’ll also cover the herbal actions & Western Herbal Materia Medica for specific for pain including anodynes, analgesics and anti-inflammatories and herbs such as California Poppy, Corydalis, Jamaican Dogwood, Hops and Hemp/CBD. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Syndromes will also be discussed.
1-3pm: Pain Workshop and Topical Remedies for the Musculoskeletal System
Topical preparations have been one of the main stays of herbal medicine through history. Herbs have been used to make therapeutic compresses, poultices, plasters, fomentations, creams, pastes, salves, ointments, liniments, and infused oils. This afternoon we’ll be creating some of these highly effective concoctions using Arnica, St John’s Wort, Comfrey, and more.

Intrigued by herbs? The herbalists at Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism (MASH) have a combined experience of using them for more than 100 years! We’d love to share our expertise with you. Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification at MASH at our home at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is currently taught online via Zoom in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm) each month (except August) with a follow –up study group webinar 1 ½ weeks after the weekend classes. Assignments and study between classes are required for certification. Classes are recorded so they can be made up if missed. Each weekend is $199, which includes class recordings, power points, handouts, study material and the follow-up webinar. Enrollment is on a rolling basis so you can join at any time.
The one-year program consisting of 11 months of study, leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 11 months and concentrates on protocols and a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Certificate of Advanced Therapeutic Herbalism or a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism (depending on clinic choices).
