Foundations of Herbalism – Respiratory System & Ears, Eyes, Nose, & Throat

Herbs & Nutrition for the Respiratory System and EENT (Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat)
We simply can’t exist without the air we breathe. Our lungs must deal with the assaults of everyday life such air pollution, cold & flu ‘bugs’, pollens and other allergens that can cause allergies, asthma and COPD. It pays to nurture our airways and lungs, remembering to stop and breathe deep, drink soothing herb teas and take herbal formulas to rebuild and calm them.
`10am-12pm: Herbal Actions for the Respiratory System
We begin this module with an introduction to the season of Autumn, the element of air and follow up with an overview of herbal actions that help balance the ‘air element’. Recipes for specific herbal blends and supplements for seasonal allergies, chronic coughs and asthma will be discussed. We’ll identify the following actions including respiratory Tropho-Restoratives (Mullein, Elder), Relaxants and Demulcents (Marshmallow, Licorice), Expectorants (Elecampane,Thyme), Mucolytics (Fenugreek) and Anti-Spasmodics (Grindelia, Khella) via organoleptics and individual energetics.
1pm-3pm: Nutrition & Supplements for the Respiratory System
This afternoon’s class will begin with an overview of basic respiratory physiology before jumping into specific nutritional strategies to support the respiratory system, including dietary intake, energetics of food, and the role of macro and micronutrients. This class will conclude with a discussion on supplements to support the respiratory system, focused on Omega 3’s, carotenoids, Vitamin D, and others.
Wednesday Follow-up Webinar, October 12th, 7 pm: Herbs for the Ears, Eyes, Nose and Throat
In this webinar, we’ll look at herbs for EENT issues such as sinus infections, earaches, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other common conditions. Herbs will include Echinacea, Calendula, Plantain, Red Clover and Bilberry. We’ll also talk about eye exercises and be making some herbal ear and nasal drops & a sinus clearing salve. The last 30 minutes of this webinar are reserved for the MASH study group.

The herbalists at the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism (MASH) have a combined experience of working with plant medicine of more than 100 years and we are passionate about sharing the wonders of herbal medicine with our students.
This certification course is currently taught both in person and online via Zoom in executive format, starting with a weekend of classes in September and then one (1) Saturday a month,10 am-12 pm, 1-3 pm (except August) with a follow-up 1 ½ hour webinar and study group after the weekend classes (on the 2nd Wed evening after the Saturday class at 7-8:30 pm). Assignments and study between classes are required for certification. Classes are recorded so they can be made up if missed. The one-year program runs for 11 months and be joined at any time during the year as classes are taught on a revolving basis. The first weekend plus each monthly Saturday and evening classes must be attended or made up and monthly assignments completed for the Foundations of Herbalism Certificate.
The cost for Year 1: 1st weekend ($199) + $150/month x 10 or $1,699 in total. If tuition paid in full, 1 month is free ($1,549).
