Spring is one of the two times of the year when cleansing is most natural and beneficial.
The transition from slow, winter hibernation energies to the excited, new growth energies of spring is awakening, especially to the body’s elimination pathways.
Using herbs internally to cleanse is one of the best tools to clean the body of toxins and impurities. Aromatherapy is another tool in your wellness toolbox that you can employ to support the body’s cleansing process and encourage the release of old, stagnant energies that can settle into your energy and emotions as well as your physical tissues.
Our DIY project this month is a cleansing spray that harnesses the power of Witch Hazel, Frankincense, Lemon, and Sage to aid the cleansing process. This spray supports natural spring cleansing for the body, mind, and spirit.
Let’s take a look at our ingredients!
Witch Hazel | Hamamelis virginiana
Some of the earliest uses of Witch Hazel for purification purposes have roots in Celtic and Druidic lore. From the old Irish tales of mythical warrior Fionn Mac Cumhaill bringing a hazel wood shield into battle to make him invincible, to the tales of 17th century English use of hazel to protect against evil and ward off disease, to the indigenous American usage of witch hazel for purifying wounds, the plant has a long history of being beneficial for cleansing and protection.
Frankincense | Boswellia serrata
The chemical constituents of Frankincense have been clinically proven to purify both wounds and air from microbes. Sacredly, churches have used Frankincense for centuries to purify space from negative energies and intentions as well as prepare for meditation and worship. The ancient Egyptians used Frankincense to help purify and protect bodies for the afterlife during embalming.
Lemon | Citrus limon
Lemon is always on-trend when it comes to cleansing and purification. One of the most popular trends is to utilize lemon for digestion and elimination by drinking it in warm water every morning. Imbibing lemon water has a host of other benefits including anti-microbial properties and immune system supportive chemical constituents.
Sage | Salvia officinalis
Indigenous Americans have a tradition of burning White Sage for purification and cleansing. It is by far the most popular product we have for cleansing spaces, but not many people realize that common Sage is equally effective at purification and cleansing, touting many antiseptic and antibacterial purification properties. It is also easier to grow and sustainably harvest.
